Biography

Paul Brochu, widely acclaimed as one of Canada’s top drummers, started playing drums at the age of 7. By the time he was 13, Paul was taking private lessons with Roger Juneau. Shortly after graduating from the Conservatory with a Master’s degree in percussion, Paul joined Montreal based Jazz-Fusion group UZEB. Between tours and the recording of UZEB albums, Mr. Brochu maintained a busy schedule. As a sought after session player his artfull playing contributed to an impressive number of jingles, albums, television shows, radio broadcasts and film soundtracks. He has lent his drumming and musical skills to a who’s who of Canadian and French Artists (Michel Legrand, Charles Aznavour, Céline Dion, Gregory Charles) and he has performed with such jazz notables (Frank Gambale, Don Alias, Tiger Okoshi, Bela Fleck, Eddie Daniels, Oliver Jones, Gino Vannelli).     Sound character: Dark, dry, woody. Fairly wide range, complex mix. Soft, responsive feel. Full, warm, open sound. Loose, soggy chick sound. Perfectly suited for traditional swing patterns, but also well usable for other acoustic styles like Blues, Country, Soul or Gospel.

Controllable, peppery stick sound over a dark layered oriental, smoky wash. A ride cymbal that can easily be used in a small jazz club setting and flourish in other styles such as blues or country music.

Very well suited for dynamic effect accents in many musical styles. Also, well suited for hand playing in percussive set-ups.
