Biography

Kiko Freitas was born on august 16th,1969 in Porto Alegre, Brasil in a family of musicians, poets and artists. As a professional drummer since 1987,he performed with great artists, such as: Michel Legrand, Nico Assumpção, João Bosco, Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque, Frank Gambale, Lee Ritenour, John Beasley, Jeff Richman, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Jeff Andrews, Hubert Laws, John Leftwich, Wolf Kerschek, Lars Jansson, Nils Landgren, James Genus, Ivan Lins, Hamilton de Holanda, Leila Pinheiro, Armando Marçal, Luiz Eça, Francis Hime, Vladyslav Sendecki, NDR Big Band, Thomas Törnhaden, Peter Knudsen, among many others. As an educator, Kiko has been carrying out many clinics in Brazil and around the world, participating as a teacher in events like: National Brazilian Drummers Festival, Curso Internacional de Verão-EMB, Masters of the Drums Workshop, Salão Internacional da Bateria, Encontro Latino Americano de Percussão (UFSM), Curitiba Memorial, Conservatório de MPB, Göteborg Music University, Malmö Music University and Stockholm Royal Achademy of Music (Sweden), Conservatorium Von Amsterdam, University from Rotherdam, California Jazz Conservatory (USA), Clumbus University (OH-USA), University of Louisville (KY-USA). Kiko has played with João Bosco for 18 years, touring extensively in Brazil, USA and Europe, performing in many international jazz festivals, such as: Schleswig-Holstein-Musik-Festival 2008, Salzau Jazz Festival, Montreaux Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Eldena Jazz Festival, Jazz Baltica, Internacionales Jazz Festival Bingen Swingt, Hamburg Jazz Open, Festival Internacional de Jazz de Granada, Ludwigshafen Enjoy Jazz, Jazz Classics Basel, Jazz Fest Sarajevo, Las Palmas Rrincón Jazz, Madrid Jazz Festival, Gijón Festival, All Blues Jazz Recitals, Istanbul Caz Jazz Festival, Kaunas Jazz Festival, Musiques Sur L'ile, Jazz Stars in Krakow, Skopje Jazz Festival, Toulouse Jazz Sur Son, Red Sea Jazz Festival.     Sound character: Full, rich, energetic with a definite dark side. Crunchy, with a meaty bite. Very wide range, very complex mix. Extremely balanced, very responsive feel. Full dark, rich, shimmering, biting open/closed sound. Beautiful, fat, meaty, crisp, cutting chick sound. Fast, responsive, articulate with excellent feel and playability. An immensely versatile hi-hat that combines finesse and articulation with raw energy and cutting power.

    Sound character: Dark, warm, smoky, breathy. Fairly wide range, complex mix. Soft feel with a quick response. Very well crashable. Controllable, peppery stick sound over a dark layered oriental, smoky wash. A ride cymbal that can easily be used in a small jazz club setting and flourish in other styles such as blues or country music.
