Biography

Jon is a native of Falls Church, Virginia. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from George Mason University in Virginia and a Master of Music degree from Howard University in Washington DC. Jon is currently touring with emcee/producer Oddisee in the band GoodCompny. Together, they have played sold out shows in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the US. Additionally, he has performed with artists including Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, David Foster, Kenny G, Dionne Warwick, Black Milk, El DeBarge, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Common, Robert Glasper, Talib Kweli, Steve Coleman, Meshell Ndegeocello, Dwele, Louie Bellson, Charlie Byrd, Fred Wesley, Cyrus Chestnut, Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath, Yusef Lateef, and Omar for his “Sing (if you want it)” national tour. Laine was the winner of Downbeat Magazine's Student Music award for Best Instrumental Soloist in 2004 for his performance of Max Roach's The Drum Also Waltzes. Jon was also the founder and music director for the annual DC LOVES DILLA tribute concert in DC.

    Sound character: Dark, trashy, papery, low. Wide range, complex and moody mix. Soft and buttery feel with a very wobbly and vibrant response. Fairly defined stick sound over a dark and cloudy wash. Perfectly suited for quieter musical settings such as blues, jazz and acoustic styles. Very user-friendly for percussive use and classical mallet application.

    Sound character: Warm, airy, snarling, silvery. Fairly wide range, complex mix. Soft feel with a very responsive, explosive splash sound. Low tuned effect cymbal for lively accents in moderate volume. Well suited for hand-playing. Vinnie Colaiuta explains: “They are sweet, they are these kind of punctuation marks in the background.”
