Biography

Joe Berardi has had a long history in the Los Angeles experimental underground music scene, both as composer and performer. Mainly known as a drummer/percussionist, he also plays a variety of instruments, from keyboards to marimba to the occasional cello and viola, along with homemade instruments, sound objects, samplers, synths and toys. His side venture, F Hole, provides an outlet for his work in electronics. He creates and builds circuit bent instruments, effects pedals and other soundmaking devices, and uses these instruments in his improvisations and recordings. Since first coming into prominence as a member of the groundbreaking avant-rock band The Fibonaccis, Berardi has been involved in a wide assortment of musical ventures, from rock and pop to experimental and free improvisiation. His unique style and use of percussive objects and found sounds within the traditional drum kit have made him a sought after collaborator. His ongoing projects and bands include Non Credo (with Kira Vollman), Double Naught Spy Car, Nancy and Beth (with Megan Mullally), Ann Magnuson (Bongwater), Stan Ridgway (Wall Of Voodoo), The Deadbeats and many more. He has also toured and/or recorded with a diverse group of notorious performers, including Rufus Wainwright, Malcolm Mooney (of CAN), Lydia Lunch, James White and the Blacks, folk legend Donovan, Pixies Frank Black & Joey Santiago, Algerian vocalist Rimitti (with Robert Fripp & Flea), Congo Norvell (with Kid Congo Powers), Don Preston & Bunk Gardner (Mothers Of Invention), The Velvet Hammer Burlesque, Motor Totemist Guild and Nels Cline (Wilco).
