One of the most in-demand musicians and educators of his generation in the jazz and creative music scenes, drummer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Tyshawn Sorey has worked with a very wide range of artists in jazz, creative music, and contemporary classical music communities since 1998 in the United States and abroad. Known for his incomparable daring and virtuosity as an improviser, sight reader, and performer of music, as well as his ability to blend composition and improvisation in his own work, Tyshawn is a very open-minded musician whose work defies genre boundaries or categorizations. His worked has been highly praised in many publications such as Modern Drummer Magazine, Wire Magazine, Rolling Stone, JazzTimes, National Public Radio, DRUM! Magazine, and Downbeat Magazine. He has performed nationally and internationally with his own ensembles, as well as with artists such as John Zorn, Steve Lehman Octet, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Vijay Iyer Trio and Sextet, International Contemporary Ensemble, Marc Ribot, and Myra Melford. Tyshawn has also been steadily focusing his time and energy on composition for various leading ensembles and orchestras as well as performing as a bandleader with his critically acclaimed piano trio, sextet, and various electroacoustic projects.
