Biography

Tony is known for his melodic approach to rhythm, a part of what makes his style so distinct. He consistently brings his energy and precision to a wide range of musical genres. Showing a true drummer’s sensibility, he can easily pinpoint what a song may call for and approach any genre with his wide range of experience - from Rock with pioneers Lou Reed and Jeff Beck, to Latin with brothers Carlos and Jorge Santana, to fusion with the Jan Hammer Group that he co- founded, to Jazz with legendary guitarist John McLaughlin, and to Pop with the French icon Serge Gainsbourg, just to mention a few. He has also been involved in a variety of musical projects including commercial soundtrack production and scoring original compositions for film and television. Tony has toured extensively both in the US and internationally and has had the honor of performing for President Bill Clinton and the President of the Czech Republic Václav Havel at the White House, and for Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. Today, Tony is a Professor at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, MA, where he brings over 40 years’ experience and innovation to the classroom. As well as teaching private lessons, Tony also teaches a course that he created as part of the Berklee curriculum called, “The Self-Produced Drummer”. In this course, students learn how to be a drummer in a studio setting and how to produce and record their own tracks. His musical opinions are often sought after by leading musical publications and news articles across the globe, such as, Modern Drummer. Tony is featured in the book, “Sticks and Skins” a compilation of the world’s top 100 drummers. Tony is also endorsed by major cymbal, drum, and electronics companies.
