Biography

I did my first pro tour in January 1960 with Gary US bonds, Gene MacDaniels and Johnny Burnett. I went on from there to work/tour with The Walker Brothers, Scott Walker, Billy Fury, Dusty Springfield, Gene Pitney and Roy Orbison. My claim to fame is that whilst we were touring the UK with Roy Orbison we went into the studio for a day and recorded 12 tracks. One of them was "Pretty Woman". I am pleased to be playing on the original recording of such a classic. Other visiting American artists I played for were Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. British artists: Cliff Richard, Ritchie Blackmore (his early bands), Rick Wakeman, Ronnie Wood, Jack Bruce, Des O’Connor, Bruce Forsyth . I toured Europe with the James Royal Set. We had two number one hits “Call my name” and “She’s about a Mover”. Then followed a funk fusion band called Nightlife. Round about 1995, I came off the road for a while and started teaching, doing clinics and workshops and corporate events. The year 2000 saw me back on the road with the Diana Terry Big Band. 2008 Paul Saxby album tour 2009 Pete Mitchell’s Drive 2009-2015 Teaching 2015-2020 The Southern Blues Kings

Sound character: A fusion of darkness, energy, projection and brilliance. Very wide range, complex, musical mix. Responsive feel, extremely controllable. Woody, silvery, spanky ping over crunchy, thriving wash. Extremely versatile, flexible ride for wide ranging application in modern blended music styles. Mark I: Tends to be a bit quieter, darker and drier. This manifests itself in the overall sound character and in particular in the bell and ping sound.
