Biography

Mark Rees is one of New Zealand’s most experienced and versatile rock drummers. A veteran of the vibrant Kiwi metal scene, Mark began playing drums at age 13. Just four years later, he was invited to join one of Christchurch’s busiest covers bands, playing packed venues most nights, despite being under the drinking age for much of his time behind the kit. In the ‘90s Mark moved to Auckland, where he co-founded Groove / Thrash metal quartet Subtract in 1998. The band has since released two EP’s, three albums and supported the world’s biggest metal acts in New Zealand and Australia, including Ozzy Osbourne, Slayer, Lamb of God, Fear Factory, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Opeth, Trivium, Shihad, Helmet, Soilwork and Exodus. As a full-time drum teacher, Mark loves sharing his knowledge and passion for music with over 200 students, ranging in age from 5 to 55. With Subtract currently on hiatus, he has been busy and just completed tracking drums for an exciting new project with an album due out soon.
