Biography

Karl Latham has performed, recorded and produced with Grammy Award winning artists, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members and multitude of internationally acclaimed musicians such as Bernie Worrell, The Shirelles (current Musical Director), Johnny and Edgar Winter, John Lee, Mark Egan, Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Stars, Ali Ryerson, Wolfgang Lackerschmid, Johannes Mossinger, Joel Frahm, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Claudio Roditi, Michael Urbaniak, Vic Juris, Howard Paul with Tom Scott and Anat Cohen. Karl currently performs with “Living Standards and Don Braden/Karl Latham Big Fun(K) . Karl is co leader with Ryan Carniaux and Mark Egan of the “2016 BMW Welt Jazz Award” nominated group “Constellations”. Karl has subbed on the New York Productions of hit Broadway shows: “Bring It On”, “Hamilton” Beautiful”, “Ain’t Too Proud”. Karl is an adjunct professor at Drew University, County College of Morris and Passaic County Community College.

    Sound character: A fusion of darkness, energy, projection and brilliance. Very wide range, complex, musical mix. Responsive feel, extremely controllable. Woody, silvery, spanky ping over crunchy, thriving wash. Extremely versatile, flexible ride for wide ranging application in modern blended music styles. Mark II: Tends to be a bit livelier and brighter. This manifests itself in the overall sound character and in particular in the bell and ping sound. Mark II also has a bit more volume potential due to its more open character.

    Sound character: Dark, warm, smoky, breathy. Fairly wide range, complex mix. Soft feel with a quick response. Very well crashable. Controllable, peppery stick sound over a dark layered oriental, smoky wash. A ride cymbal that can easily be used in a small jazz club setting and flourish in other styles such as blues or country music.

Complex, washy ride sound. A modern China cymbal with a wide spectrum for various musical applications. “The China is nearly smooth”, states Vinnie Colaiuta.
