Biography

Evan Sherman (b. 1993) has performed, recorded and toured on 4 continents in the bands of music icons: Ron Carter, Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, Cyrus Chestnut, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis and more. Born into a musical family in New Jersey, he began playing the drums at age 5 and had his first professional gigs at 13. By age 25, Evan had the honor of playing many of the world's most prestigious stages: Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Birdland, London's Queen Elizabeth Hall, New Morning in Paris, Bartok Hall in Budapest, Palau De La Música in Barcelona, Lincoln Center's Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center NYC, Doha & Shanghai, Washington's Kennedy Center as well as the Newport, Detroit, and Jerusalem jazz festivals, to name a few. In 2014, he formed the Evan Sherman Big Band, a 16-piece ensemble for which he writes and arranges, of up-and-coming young lions alongside a rotating cast of seasoned veterans and guests that have included appearances by Roy Hargrove, Johnny O’Neal, & Jon Batiste. The big band held a 5-year residency at Dizzy's Club's late night dance parties as well as the Perth International Arts Festival (Australia), The Rainbow Room (Rockefeller Center), The Blue Note, Birdland (NYC), Ginny’s Supper Club (Harlem), The Django (TriBeca), Midsummer Night’s Swing (Lincoln Center), Caramoor Jazz Festival, and SteelStacks (PA). In 2017, Sherman co-produced and performed on a live trio recording with pianist, Emmet Cohen, flanked by the legendary bassist, Ron Carter. The album continues to receive critical praise citing Sherman as “a beacon of taste”, “who, though in his mid-20's, plays here like an old master”. Evan also presents clinics/workshops, sharing his experiences and enthusiasm with music fans and students all over the world. Since 2017, Sherman has served as artistic director for "Jazz for Jennings", a charitable event started by the late ABC world news journalist, Peter Jennings and drum legend Max Roach. In 2020, Evan was featured on Today Show with Hoda Kotb and Wynton Marsalis after putting on hundreds of free outdoor concerts in NYC. In 2021, the Evan Sherman Quintet released the album Sidewalkin' - available on all platforms.
