Biography
Bungo Jonas is a drummer, performing artist and part of the band Roy Bianco & Die Abbrunzati Boys. The group, as well as Bungo himself, satirically embodies a tight concept of a Schlager band with German and Italian lyrics that has existed since 1982. Bungo claims that he grew up in 1970s Rio de Janeiro and spent most of his childhood on the vibrant beaches of the Copacabana. There, he always was surrounded by rhythm and music while he was playing soccer, went dancing, surfing or was himself playing the bongos. To channel these expressions of beat and physical experience into one, he went on learning to play the drums, or as he describes it, “a journey to find a blissful equilibrium of the physical human arts, a brotherhood of movement and song.” Short after that, he became part of the local music scene, made himself a reputation as “Bungo Jonas” and found his first band called “Ipanema Samba Fighters” (ISF). In 1984, he spontaneously joined the group Roy Bianco & Die Abbrunzati Boys for their show at the “Internationales Schlagerfestival Rio de Janeiro”. Their actual drummer Michael Klotz was not able to hold his sticks anymore due to plastic surgery performed on his hands (webbed skin between his fingers), which he underwent the night before the gig. Bungo remained with the group ever since. After years of success Roy Bianco & Die Abbrunzati Boys broke up for unknown reasons in 1997, but made a comeback in 2016 with the ultimate goal of getting back to their old glory, back to the Olympus of Schlager („Schlagerolymp“). Needless to say, all this sounds quite unbelievable. But it is by default. Bungo Jonas is a living myth himself and clings very strict to the concept of the group. Nevertheless, he and the band released two albums since their comeback with the second Album „Mille Grazie“ reaching #1 in the German charts in 2022 (with Red Hot Chili Peppers on second; Bungo: „Sorry and Peace & Love to my Paiste colleague Chad Smith!“) Now his band is touring again with over 60+ Shows a year and is back on their way to former glory. But Bungo Jonas never seems to get that success to his head. Maybe it is due to his philosophy of drumming: „Be humble and serve the music like the wave serves the surfer to shine. You don’t have to be the best drummer, you just have to learn to become that wave.“ Or perhaps it is his mantra: „Peace & Love. Peace & Love!“ (Which, by the way, his old friend Ringo Star [drummer of the Beatles] also took over). All in all, the narrative of Bungo Jonas might be (or not) an ironic pastiche about art and is a way of theater. But his unique style playing the drums make him yet an outstanding artist in his own right and a proud member of the Paiste Family.
