Artist Spotlight: MIKE TERRANA

Whenever Mike Terrana sits behind a drum kit, you see nothing less than 100% energetic, physical, powerful drumming. After moving from the U.S. to Europe in the late 1990s, Mike spent a lot of time recording and touring with guitar virtuosos of the Heavy Rock genre such as Tony Macalpine or Yngwie Malmsteen.

His critically acclaimed solo clinics showcase his mastery of double bass technique, amazing showmanship, and established him as a pure Metal powerhouse drummer and accomplished clinician. But: there is much more to Mike Terrana than meets the eye. Mike was influenced by Jazz legends Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson and Tony Williams, as well as by Rock icons such as John Bonham and Cozy Powell. With Cozy he shared a love for classical music, which inspired Terrana’s solo project “Sinfonica.” Together with former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen, he recently toured as “The Beauty And The Beat,” fulfilling his dream of leading a monstrous orchestra and choir, which called or an emphasis on dynamic and musical playing. For these shows, he switched from his preferred Signature Full Crashes to 2002 Thin Crashes.

Mike on his Paiste Signature cymbal set: “I am currently using a selection of white coated Signature Full Crashes. They sound amazing live and in the studio. I like the way the cymbal frequencies react with each other. I never experienced this with any other brand of cymbals. I think perhaps because the cymbals are hand hammered and lathed by craftsmen, that these cymbals really have a soul and personality that I was looking for. They are brilliant warm and musical. I am also using a Paiste Sound Creation Gong painted white. It’s a beautiful looking piece and it sounds dark and mysterious with many complex overtones.”

Mike Terrana will be touring throughout Brazil in September and October (see picture for dates and venues) followed by several weeks of European dates with Tarja Turunen:

What’s your main advice to up and coming drummers?
Practice hard, live clean, be realistic, have fun and never, never give up on…YOUR DREAMS!
What are your main influences in drumming & music?
I listen to a lot of Jazz, Swing and Bossa Nova …. I find it relaxing and inspirational. I am also a big fan of the band Weather Report. I would have to say my favorite modern day musician is Jaco Pastorius, bass player from Weather Report. He was the Bad Boy of the Jazz World, a musical genius, and had a very interesting personality. Jaco was also a great drummer and so was his father. Unfortunately he is no longer alive. I think he had a lot more to give.
What’s on your iPod?
Frank Sinatra: Alive at the Sands with the Quincy Jones Orchestra with Sonny Payne on drums
Led Zeppelin: The Collection
Steely Dan: Live featuring Dennis Chambers on drums
