RICH MANGICARO "Travels" recording process

In the world of Paiste, RICH MANGICARO is well known as a powerhouse Drummer Service manager, having signed several top artists, including Danny Carey, Abe Laboriel Jr., John Robinson, Nathaniel Townsley, Tommy Aldridge and many others.

Throughout the 20 plus years he worked for Paiste, he was an active player in the Los Angeles area and around the world. Most notably, Rich was the percussionist and background vocalist for Eagles band members Glenn Frey and Joe Walsh in the Glenn Frey/Joe Walsh Band for 15 years.

Now, Rich has put his music and talent at the forefront of a new project, Travels. This collection of instrumental songs written and performed by Rich with a select group of very talented friends range from open and ethereal to very powerful.

We asked Rich to share his process with us:

“Travels” is a very personal project and features a collection of melodic ideas from my lifetime of influences. After completing it, I realized the artists who heavily impacted my creative process, including Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Peter Gabriel, Jeff Beck, Bruce Hornsby, Coldplay, various drummers & percussionists including Alex Acuna, Lenny Castro, Luis Conte, Ralph McDonald, Steve Shehan, Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Jordan and Jim Keltner…and also film composers Ennio Morricone, John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams.

I began this recording project about 7 years ago, using Garage Band, quite literally - in my garage! For many years, I’ve had melodies in my head and had a small studio setup, so I started mapping some things out. At that time, I’d just lost my mother so one of the first tunes I wrote, called Solitude was in reaction to that debilitating loss. That song sonically illustrates the phases we go through with major loss - shock, sadness, anger and acceptance. Ironically, Side By Side Forever followed, which was inspired by loving couples in my life. I dedicated that song to my in-laws, Fred & Carol Tanenbaum, now 76 years old, who’ve actually been together since they were 15.

The lead song on the album, Travels Through Mecca was inspired by my travels in IsraeI & Jordan, which was a life-changing experience for me. I began layering some loop ideas on the flight home and a few years later, eventually wrote the percussive conversations that accompanied the loops.

The songs that follow reflect my love for the many different styles I listen to and are my way to give thanks to those who’ve created all the amazing music that’s shaped my life. All the basic tracks on “Travels” were recorded in Logic Pro X, at my West LA studio-RAM57 Productions, where I played all the drums, percussion and keyboards and then mixed & produced with my long-time music partner, multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Clark at Watermoon Studios in Valley Village, CA. Jonathan & I toured for many years with Glenn Frey & Joe Walsh and continue to produce various projects together.

Burning Meadows, the song on the album that also features a music video I created, now appearing on You Tube, was inspired by a dance performance I attended, featuring a song by a British composer named Jon Hopkins. Along with my music, the video features a collection of my father’s paintings and is the 1st time both my father’s art and my music have been combined in an artistic piece. 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of my father’s passing and 2020 will mark the 100th anniversary of his birth in Calabria, Italy…”Travels” is dedicated to my father Dominic Mangicaro, my 1st artistic influence.

I’m so proud that this album has currently been featured on both KPFA - 94.1 in San Francisco and also on KPFK - 90.7 in Los Angeles. The physical CD of “Travels”, featuring Dominic Mangicaro’s original artwork, can be found on Bandcamp and digitally on Bandcamp, iTunes, Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify and You Tube.

My humble thanks to everyone who’ve supported me along the way and who’ve been so encouraging on this project. And special thanks to everyone at Paiste, who’ve been a part of my life for the past 30 years. My experience working with the beautiful instruments they make and with the amazing artists I’ve met along the way have been invaluable to me. The Paiste instruments used on this album include the Traditional, Giant Beat and 602 series cymbals, the Finger Cymbal Row and the Sound Creation Earth Gong.

Thank you, all!
