WHO IS...VICTOR RIBAS

NAME:

Victor Manuel Ribas

MAIN BAND (WEBSITE):

Smile Empty Soul - http://www.smileemptysoul.com/

OTHER PROJECTS (WEBSITE):

St. Louis Blues - https://www.nhl.com/blues /

PAISTE ARTIST SINCE:

Happily and gratefully since 2011

BIRTHDAY:

6/13/1986

HOMETOWN:

Seattle, WA

PLAYING DRUMS SINCE:

I received my first drum kit when I was 11 years old (1997) and began piano lessons when I was 5 years old (1991)

FIRST DRUMKIT:

A bright blue 4-piece Ludwig with wal-mart brand cymbals

FIRST PAISTE CYMBAL:

My first PAISTE cymbal was my 22" 2002 Heavy Ride. It's hands down my favorite ride ever. It has the most controlled sound and I can get seemingly an unlimited number of sounds out of it.

FAV PAISTE CYMBAL & WHY:

My favorite PAISTE cymbal has to be either my 18" or 19" Signature Reflector Series crashes. They have so much sustain and the absolute most amazing overtones and undertones. I can get so many sounds out of them. Plus, almost every new studio or live engineer I work with tells me they're the best cymbals they've ever heard.

This is Victor's Cymbal Set:

Blessed to have a number of PAISTE setups. My chosen setup changes depending on the artist/project i'm working on. But my "go-to" versatile setup is:

15" 2002 Sound Edge Hi-Hat

18" Signature Reflector Heavy Full Crash

22" 2002 Ride

20" 2002 Novo China

18" PST X Swiss Medium Crash

HEROES:

The Buddha is absolutely my life hero, Danny Carrey is my drum hero, and my parents.

HOBBIES:

Acting/modeling, taking my dog Siddhartha "Sid" to the park, going to St. Louis Blues hockey games, contributing to the culture of Seattle and St. Louis (both my current hometowns), as well as fostering the next generation of drummers/musicians in any way possible.

FAV FOOD:

Without a doubt, my favorite food is sushi. And I mean real sushi (raw fish). If I had my way, I'd eat it every day for three meals a day ;)

TOP 3 ALBUMS OR SONGS:

This is such a hard question to answer. There's so many amazing albums out there. I'd have to say the album Fantastic Planet by Failure has my favorite drum tones, TOOL's Aenema has my favorite rhythms, and Karnivool's Sound Awake has my favorite overall compositions.

FAV SONG, THAT YOU RECORDED:

Hurt - Eden

FAV CITY:

Even after traveling all over the world, my favorite cuty is still my hometown... Seattle

BEST EVER SHOW OF PAISTE ARTIST, THAT YOU ATTENDED:

For sure it was Danny Carrey of TOOL in 2007 at Bonaroo

IF YOU WEREN’T A DRUMMER, YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE A …:

Doctor. To follow in the family's foot steps. But, I'm content being the creative one of the family. :)

WHAT CAN’T YOU BUY WITH MONEY:

Enlightenment.... Happiness... Talent..... Love.... Success.

RITUAL BEFORE A SHOW/RECORDING SESSION:

I meditate fairly regularly. Especially before a show. I also make sure i've eaten a healthy meal before a show or session

TALISMAN ON STAGE/IN STUDIO:

A Picture of my dog sits on my stick bag. It's always with me.

DO YOU PREFER TOURING OR RECORDING AND WHY:

I love both touring and recording. As long as I get to play music I'm happy. But if I had to choose one, I'd say I love the magic that can happen in the studio as well as the overall sense of accomplishment you feel when an album is completed

RECOMMENDATION FOR A BEGINNER:

The three pieces of advice I give any beginning artist are:
1) Learn basic technique from a qualified and experienced teacher. It will save you a lot of energy and time as well as possibly prevent injury in the long run.
2) Stay Humble no matter what success you find. You'll end up seeing all the same people on the way down as you did on the way up.
3) If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong.
