Philip Coiro is a professional drummer and concert percussionist in New York City. He performs in a wide variety of musical settings which include live concert engagements, broadway, off-broadway, recording and orchestral work. Philip has played drums on broadway for ‘American Psycho’ and held the drum chair in the 2016 off-broadway revival of Jonathan Larson's 'Tick, Tick...Boom!'. Music has allowed Philip to travel throughout the United States performing on a variety of shows, they include the 1st national tour of ‘Flashdance’ The Musical, the 1st national tour of the Tony nominated Broadway musical ‘The Wedding Singer’, ‘The Wizard of Oz' and 'A Chorus Line'. His other theater credits in New York City ‘Silence!’ The Musical, ‘Sistas’ The Musical, 'HA!' The Musical and in the City's longest running variety burlesque show, Le Scandal. Philip is currently the music director for singer-songwriter Troy Ramey and is frequently playing drums in concert with broadway stars, including Mandy Gonzalez (Hamilton/In the Heights), Natalie Weiss (Wicked/Everyday Rapture), Natalie Joy Johnson (Kinky Boots/Legally Blonde), Kerry Butler (Hairspray/Catch Me if You Can) and Faith Prince (Annie/Guys and Dolls) to name a few. He has also backed up and number of other singer-songwriters including David Ross, singer-model-actress Kate Nauta, latin pop artist Cáthia (NBC’s The Voice, Season 4) and was a sideline musician for NBC's drama, 'SMASH' (Season 2, episode 8 "Bells & Whistles). Philip can be heard on Cáthia’s 2014 debut EP ‘UNBREAKABLE’ on the track titled ‘Catching Feelings’ and also on Troy’s 2016 singles, ’Daisy’ and ‘Cover Me’. A classical percussion major at Purchase Conservatory of Music under Raymond DesRoches and Dr. Dominic Donato. He is an alumni of the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset, NY and the New York Youth Symphony. While at Purchase Philip and fellow percussionist Brian Rolston had the privilege to perform the United States premiere of Søren Barfoed’s four movement percussion duet, ‘Safricana’. He has since worked with chamber groups and local orchestras, most recently performing ‘Carmina Burana' with the National Chorale under the baton of Everett McCorvey. With a musical career that has taken him to over 150 cities across the United States Philip has performed at some of the most prestigious venues, Carnegie Hall, the Chicago theater, the FOX theaters in St. Louis and Atlanta as well as the 'WAMU' theater at Madison Square Garden to name a few. Between performing Philip teaches private lessons at his home studio on Long Island and has given master classes for the percussion students at the University of Auburn, Indiana University in Pennsylvania and Butler University. Philip is a proud artist for PAISTE Cymbals and member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 802 in New York City & the Percussive Arts Society.
