„I started playing drums when I was about 8 or 9 but I didn’t get serious about it until I was in my teens. I was always playing in bands but I realised I was going to have to broaden my areas of expertise if I wanted to be sure I could make a living out of music… So I spent 7 years in school learning how to play classical percussion. I learned how to play just about anything you hit with a stick but the drum-set was always my one true calling.

My university-classmates could always get all passionate about how to play the triangle but I really didn’t care. The triangle goes ‘ pling’ and the only way you’re going to get people to notice, is if it doesn’t go ‘ pling'. I was always taking instructions from conductors 50 meters away from me. It wasn’t good enough for me. I wanted to be the conductor. I wanted to be the center. I decide what a good tempo is. I decide how I want the music to sound and feel like.

I was basically just about done with my Masters-Degree in Classical Percussion when this band came along changed everything about my life. I went from being a very ordinary guy with a very ordinary life to living on a tourbus and playing shows 250 days a year, seemingly overnight. Since then, we’ve recorded 3 albums, played all the biggest festivals around Europe… over 600 shows in total.

University was always about restraint… be gentle, play softer, lighter… control yourself. when I joined Royal Republic I was allowed to play exactly how and what I wanted. It was very liberating.

I think I still have that feeling when I’m on stage with Royal Republic. I sit down behind my drums, look at all the people and as soon as I start playing, I just feel incredibly free.

It’s been a crazy trip and I’m so proud and excited to have Paiste on board for the ride.“
