Biography


Matt Mayhall is a drummer, percussionist, composer, and music educator based in Los Angeles, CA. Originally from Reno, NV, Matt holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees in percussion from University of Nevada, Reno. He also holds an MFA in Jazz Studies from California Institute of the Arts, where he studied drums with Joe LaBarbera and improvisation with Charlie Haden and Wadada Leo Smith.

Matt has performed and collaborated with many renowned artists in the world of creative instrumental music: Anthony Wilson, Ben Wendel, Chris Speed, Jeff Parker, Devin Hoff, Adam Benjamin, Tim Lefebvre, Tigran Hamasyan, Peter Epstein, Petra Haden, Vinny Golia, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and many others. As a percussionist, he has worked with multimedia/performance artists Mike Kelley and Scott Benzel.

Since 2008, Matt has been a member of the band Spain, led by bassist/vocalist/songwriter Josh Haden (son of jazz bassist Charlie Haden). During Mattís time with the band, they have self-released a 7-inch single and a full length LP/CD through the German label Glitterhouse Records. The toured Europe three times in 2012, and are gearing up to record a new full-length album in May of 2013.

As a sideman in the pop world, Matt has worked with Lenka (Epic Records), Spencer Day (Concord Records), Emmy Rossum (Warner Bros.), Lucy Woodward (Verve Records), Schuyler Fisk (Universal Records), Miranda Lee Richards (Nettwerk), and Patrick Park (Hollywood Records), among others.

As an educator, Matt has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has also taught for Cal Artsí Community Arts Partnership, lectured at the University of California San Diego Summer Jazz Camp, and served as faculty member for the Academy of Creative Education in North Hollywood.
