Biography

Brian Hill, drummer for the band WAVVES, has spent the past fifteen years in a constant cycle of touring and recording. Beginning with the noisy San Diego outfit, The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower in the early 2000s, he gained a reputation around town for a jazzy, yet aggressive style of playing. The band built a cult following for their wild live performances. Over their five-year stint, they toured throughout the United States and Europe in support of such bands as The Locust and The Blood Brothers.

Hill then went on to join The Soft Pack (originally called “The Muslims”), shortly before the San Diego band relocated to Los Angeles. Numerous tours took the band across Europe, Australia, and North America. The band's quick, no-frills, “party-angst” pop tunes garnered the band a strong following with critics and fans alike. They even landed a quick hang with David Letterman in early 2010. Hill standing behind a cocktail drum kit looked just odd enough to afford a little extra camera time. The song featured, “Answer to Yourself”, became their best known track after this performance. Their self-titled album, The Soft Pack (2010 Kemado Records), further pushed the band forward. Giving support to Franz Ferdinand, Phoenix, the Breeders, and hitting Coachella and Lollapalooza are some highlights. After the release of their second album Strapped (2012, Mexican Summer)–and a few headlining tours around Europe and the US—The Soft Pack packed their gear up for an extended hiatus in the Summer of 2013.

Brian moved forward with various friends' projects doing fill-in tours with the band Crocodiles, along with some session work. The band WAVVES then reached out to Hill about joining for some upcoming tours in Fall of 2013. Festival dates, headlining tours, and an appearance on Conan came quickly in support of Afraid of Heights (2013 Mom + Pop Music) and the band's contribution to Grand Theft Auto V (2013, Rockstar Games). His recording debut with the band came as theWAVVES/Cloud Nothings collaborative effort No Life For Me (2015, Ghost Ramp). WAVVES' latest, V (2015, Warner Brothers), also features Hill's punchy stick work with energetic punk/pop flare. More headlining jaunts around the USA, Europe, and Australia, along with a featured performance on Last Call with Carson Daly rounded out 2015 for the band. In early 2016, WAVVES enjoyed a successful tour co-headlining with Best Coast.

So, what's next in 2016? WAVVES are heading back into the studio this Spring, with producer Dennis Herring, to begin work on their next record. The cycle continues...
