Aaron Kierbel is a drummer/percussionist who likes to think of himself as a sound painter. Hailing from Los Angeles, he studied with Joe Porcaro and Earl Palmer and his first gigs saw him drumming with cult legend Harvey Sid Fisher and Afro baroque band The Negro Problem. But San Francisco was calling and he had to accept the charges.
In the bay area, he studied jazz with Akira Tana, George Marsh and Pete Magadini. Embracing the rich cultural diversity of the area, Aaron explored many styles of music: Norteņo, Klezmer, Dixieland, Brazilian funk rock, psychedelic rock, old soul and many more. He is currently the drummer in Rupa and the April Fishes, an eclectic world music group, with whom he has toured internationally and nationally since 2006, sharing the stage with artists such as Manu Chao, Andjelique Kidjo, Susana Baca and....Iron Maiden!
He currently plays with many local artists including Ethiopian born singer songwriter Meklit Hadero, the cutting edge avant garde outfit Charming Hostess, retro soul group Quinn Deveaux and the Bluebeat Review and every sunday at a Baptist Church in the Bayview district of San Francisco. He records regularly with artists on the local label Porto Franco records, as well as Cumbancha.
He also enjoys music education, and he can be found teaching preschool kids the joy of rhythm and music through the organization he works for called Performing Arts Workshop.
