Biography


Fredy Studer was born in Lucerne (Switzerland), where he still resides. He is a self-taught drummer and percussionist. Since the early seventies he has performed as a freelancer with musicians ranging from "A", such as Abercrombie, to "Z", such as Zorn.

Over the past forty years, Studer has worked with many different bands and projects. He has given concerts and workshops, made radio and television recordings, and composed music for dance, theatre and film throughout Europe, Africa, Japan, South America, the Caribbean, Taiwan, India, Russia, the United States and Canada. Numerous prizes and honors.

Current groups and projects are the hardcore chambermusic trio "Koch-Schütz-Studer" with Hans Koch and Martin Schütz, the band "Phall Fatale" with Joana Aderi, Joy Frempong, John Edwards and Daniel Sailer, the Jimi Hendrix Project with Erika Stucky, Christy Doran and Jamaaladeen Tacuma, a drum-trio with Jojo Mayer and Joey Baron, "OM" with Urs Leimgruber, Christy Doran and Bobby Burri, the "Franco Ambrosetti - Fredy Studer Sextet" with Franco Ambrosetti, Andy Scherrer, Harald Haerter, Hans Feigenwinter and Patrice Moret, the duo with Pierre Favre and the percussion-trio "Schulkowsky-Studer-Baron" with Robyn Schulkowsky and Joey Baron.

Fredy Studer was one of the first drummers who incorporated open improvisation as well as straight beats into his style. His work has been recorded on more than 70 CDs and LPs.
